York and Lancaster
York and Lancaster
This cultivar is also known as War of the Roses. It’s believed to be the oldest cultivar known to date. It’s dated back in 1850’s ? Quite on the rare side and has the French origin. The story for this cultivar is fascinating. Look it up.
We introduced several plants of York and Lancaster to our gardens in 2022 strictly for the love of history and its uniqueness. We wouldn’t have it any other way. We put her in late—based on our observations, she’s a late mid-season bloomer, around 3+ feet tall. No blooms are exactly alike, which is an interesting (This phenomenon is called a Conundrum )..She makes some tubers but not a lot. We’ve tried cuttings to increase stocks, unfortunately, this cultivar doesn’t root well. She is definitely worth the efforts though.
